What are bebop scales?
Bebop scales are Major, Dorian, Mixolydian and Melodic Minor scales with an added “Chromatic” passing note making them 8 note scales.
In the example below you will see how the added chromatic passing tone makes the scale logical.
1 3 5 7th notes of the chord [C E G B flat] are all “On” the beat whereas the “non chord tones” D F A B natural are played “Off” the beat.
