The key to alternate picking with this sort of basic John McLaughlin mid tempo ii V7 I is to divide the groupings into 4 notes [Tetrachords] and count the time as you pick the notes.

In the video you will see how the fretting hand plays and then releases in order to connect the line together so that the fretting hand is not stuck or tense, but relaxed and always ready to make the next connection.
