Indian tin taal guitar lesson – modern music theory and application

INDIAN HARMONIC MINOR GUITAR SCALE RAGA. TEEN TAAL John Mclaughlin “Shakti” Lesson

jazz/fusion guitarist John Mclaughlin builds this Indian “Raga” through the harmonic minor scale creating a “Fusion” style of music. The key to this style and lesson is to build 4 note groupings of 16th notes called “Tetrachords”. In this lesson we use the A harmonic minor Scale and employ strict alternate picking starting on a “Down” stroke.

Keep the alternate picking rhythmical and tight by accenting the first note of each 4 note grouping. This way you will know where you are in the bar or rhythmic cycle as for example in Teen Taal.

John Mclauhglin Shakti Indian Raga Guitar lesson through Teen Taal

This example is based upon fusion guitarist John Mclaughlin’s “Shakti” Indian Raga style of Guitar improvising through “Teen Taal”.

As always keep the alternate picking rhythmical and count in groups of four 16th notes called “Tetrachords”. Or, count in the Indian Konokol rhythm system “Ta Ka Di Me”. Accent the first beat of each 4 note grouping with the guitar pick.

EXAMPLE:

This will give your alternate picking consistency and fluidity because you will know where you are in the bar or the rhythmic cycle, for instance as in Teen Taal.
