Al Di Meola/John McLaughlin-Strumming Guitar Lesson

Please watch video above for a detailed analysis:

Hi Guys,

The key to learning percussive guitar strumming is to be able to shift through the rhythmic gears. When you can do this then you can double the time and add percussive flourishes [al la Al di Meola] to your right hand strumming.

Start by counting the quarter note and then move to the eighth note and then up to the 16th note.

SEXTUPLETS:

The next grouping to contend with is the group of 6 notes called sextuplets.

Meola-McLaughlin-rhythm-guitar

You can count 1 2 3 4 5 6

or you could break it up into 16th’s as in,

I prefer to employ Konokol and use this as my count for the rhythm. This is because it is easy to say quickly and will register with my brain and produce lightning reflexes with my right strumming hand

In order to get 16th notes in quick succession it is essential to count them as:

1 e and a 2 e and a 3 e and a 4 e and a

Mixing Rhythmic values:

The next concept is where it all falls into place. This consists of mixing up the rhythms and creating double timing patterns for percussive effect.

Alternate Picking Guitar Exercise [4 Positions] Guitar Lesson

Please watch video above for a detailed analysis:

Hi Guys,

Today we will look at an exercise for connecting scales in 4 positions along the fingerboard with alternate picking.

The first point to take into account is that it is best to “Accent” the third note of each 4 note grouping.

This will drive the music/exercise along.

The next point to consider is the simplistic guitar fingering employed because this makes it easy for the fretting hand to connect the different positions together.

Here is the exercise:

Alternate Picking:Guitar Technique-Part 2 [Fretting Hand]

Please watch video above for a detailed analysis:

Hi Guys,

Today we will look at part 2 on alternate picking guitar technique.

The key to these exercises is to “Accent” the third note of each 4 note [Tetrachord] grouping . [You can also accent the first note].

Why do we do this?

This is because the accents push the music along.

This also works like links in a chain that connect the notes together for smooth and rhythmical phrases.

So, before we attempt this sort of phrasing,

We need to make sure that have our basic 8ths to 16 notes rhythmical and really tight.

In the first exercise we will ascend in one position and then descend in another:

We will start on a down stroke and employ strict alternate picking:

In the next example we will ascend and descend in one position:

Finally,

it is a good idea to use a simple pentatonic scale with a simple guitar fingering and play over a 2 5 1 loop to get the accents, rhythm and musical phrasing tight.
