Julian Lage’s use of Inventive chromatics. [But notice that they always link back and resolve to the tonic note C].
Here Julian employs C#Maj7 to replace Dm7 and G7. It acts as a superimposition [Line] and substitution [Chord]. He quickly moves back to G though to finally cadence back to C.
Superimposition/Substitution: Julian lage’s Chord and Improvised Line example. ii and V [Dm7 G7] are replaced with F#m and Bbm. He again employs the bIIMaj7 [C#Maj7 enharmonically DbMaj7]in order to finally resolve [Slip down a semitone] back into C Maj.
