How to Anticipate/Syncopate and play off the beat: The example below is a little sequence. Notice the tie across the bar line.
Now notice that the bass is anticipating and pushing the sequence along by firstly playing on the & [of 2&]:
Here is the whole sequence where we can see the 2& being pushed and the 4& anticipated and tied over the bar line. The next bar starts on the off beat [1&].
