Alternate Picking Guitar Exercise [4 Positions] Guitar Lesson

Hi Guys,

Today we will look at an exercise for connecting scales in 4 positions along the fingerboard with alternate picking.

The first point to take into account is that it is best to “Accent” the third note of each 4 note grouping.

This will drive the music/exercise along.

The next point to consider is the simplistic guitar fingering employed because this makes it easy for the fretting hand to connect the different positions together.

Hi Guys,

Today we will look at mixing guitar picking patterns in the style of Fripp/KingCrimson

To begin with we will employ “Down Down Up” [Down Up]

Next we will add two extra notes [Down Up] in order to get back to starting on the down stroke again.

We then repeat the riff and finish this time with one note so that we can start the next phrase on an up stroke with strict alternate picking:

We now apply the strict alternate picking starting on the “Up stroke”:

After repeating the above we start the next part with alternate picking starting on a “Down Stroke

We finish this phrase on a down stroke in order to start the next phrase starting on an “Upstroke

Finally, we employ a “Down Down Up” triplet figure.

Fusion chords/Improvised Line [John McLaughlin style]

Hi Guys,

Today we will have a look at a I Vi [VI] ii V V I cadence with fusion chord substitutions.

For the first chord of C major we will employ: C6/9

For the A7 chord we will go a flattened 5th away with an Eb Triad over an E natural bass.

For the Dm7 chord we will use a 2nd inversion C triad over an F bass note. [Dm9/11 1st inversion]

For the first Dominant substitution we will go a flat 5 away again and use Db over a B bass:[as in an altered 1st inversion]

For the second dominant chord we will put the flattened 5th note [Db] in the bass with a G triad on top:

We finally resolve to a C Maj7#11 tonic chord:
