2 short John McLaughlin Acoustic Jazz Guitar Licks/Cadences

Hi Guys,

Today just a couple of John McLaughlin “Style” acoustic guitar licks/cadences on ii V7 I’s

The first one has a phrasing that really feels like two groups of sextuplets. This in turn creates a sort of juxtaposed phrasing as it is picked in 4 note tetrachord groupings starting with an up beat.

But, the alternate picking pattern starting on an Upstroke pushes this juxtaposition quite naturally.

The second part of the first bar simplifies this by employing basic 2 notes per string phrasing:

The next bar being played over the Dominant 7th chord employs the same type of mixed phrasing as the first bar:

We conclude with 2 triads of Eminor and F Major:

This lick starts with an upbeat and an upstroke on the open E string:

From here we start on a downstroke with 4 note groupings of Tetrachord connections:

The final phrase employs the same juxtaposed notes/groupings as the first exercise which finally rest on the tonic chord of C Maj7:

Hi Guys,

Today, a quick look at exploiting the Em scale for John McLaughlin’s and Shakti’s composition “Lotus Feet”.

The key to making a solo sound interesting is to highlight the prominent notes of the scale: In this case it is the semitones F# G and B and C.

Here are the semitones ascending:

Here, they are descending:

Also, take into consideration that the F# note will make the Cmaj7 Lydian:

Now, let’s add one extra note to the semitones and create an imitated phrase going through the octaves.

Now, we will connect some scale to the semitones ascending:

Here we will connect three tetrachords in 3/4 creating a smooth pentatonic style line:

Another key component when improvising is to exploit the arpeggios within the scale:

Two arpeggios that work well for this composition are Em and Bm:

E minor:

Mixing the scale with the arpeggio also works really well.

It’s always a good idea to have a few pentatonic’s from the scale at hand:

Here we can manipulate the Em, Bm, and Am to good effect. Again we can make them more unique by adding the semitones:

Bm Pentatonic:

Am Pentatonic:
